Jan. 7    Introduction to course.  Adolescents in contexts.  How do teachers use knowledge of adolescent development and individual difference in their teaching?  What is the teacher's role in students' development? Read:  Eccles et al. (1993): Development during adolescence: The impact of stage-environment fit on young adolescents' experiences in schools and in families;Muus (1996, excerpt): Bronfenbrenner's four ecological systems.

Jan. 9    Identity development in Contexts.  Who am I?  Who do I want to be?  Trying out identities.  Read: Arnett (2001): The Self; Jigsaw: Gender (by the 14th). Bring your ecosystem drawings.

Jan. 14  Intellectual identities. How can teachers make a place for identity development?  Read Greeno (in press) Students with competence, authority, and accountability: Affording intellective identities in classrooms; Cain & Hilty (1993): Matika:"I picture myself as being this woman."

Jan. 16  Difference and identity. Read: Nelson-Barber & Harrison (1996): Bridging the politics of identity in a multicultural classroom; Jigsaw: Savin-Williams (1995): Lesbian, gay male, and bisexual adolescents;  Wilson (1993): Misconceptions of self and identity;  Callahan (1997): Advice about being an LD student.

Jan. 21 Peer groups and peer cultures.  Read:  Brown (1990): Peer groups and peer cultures; Finders (1997):  When you're in junior high, everything's different. Student Panel from Mountlake Terrace High School with teacher Susan Hegeberg (UW TEP 2000)

Jan. 23   Social Development in Contexts: Bullying in schools; fostering collaboration and interdependence. Read Eder, et al. (1995): Crude comments and sexual scripts; Dan Savage (1999): Fear the Geek; Cohen (1994) Restructuring the classroom: Conditions for productive small groups.

Jan. 28  Intro to Special Education: Read: Ysseldyke, Algozzine, & Thurlow: The condition of special education; N. Zigmond: Rethinking secondary school programs for students with learning disabilities. Discuss upcoming field experience and Case Study #1 (Shadowing).

Jan. 30   Guest speaker:  Diana Gruman to discuss sexual harrassment and related strategies for teachers.



February 3-14:  Field experience I.  Case Study #1, Classroom management mini-cases + get a copy of your school's discipline plan. (may be done during Field experience II).

Feb. 18 Laws, Referral, Secondary programs for students with disabilities, post-school status of graduates with disabilities, IEPs.  Read: pages 20-25 of the WACs: http://www.k12.wa.us/specialed/wac/wac_392_172.doc ; Post-school Status Report of 1999 Special Education Graduates

Feb. 20  Planning the year, creating democratic classrooms. Guest speaker: middle school teacher Wendy Ewbank (UW TEP 1992). Meet with other section in 104. Read: Gathercoal (1998): Judicious discipline.



February 24-28:  Field experience II.  Case Study #1, mini-case, discipline plan. (may be done during Field experience I).

Mar. 4  Debrief the field experience.  Workshop on writing up Case Study 1.  Bring notes, drafts, outlines, readings, and your ideas.

Mar. 6    Classroom management: Creating social and intellectual contexts. Read: Linda McNeil (1986): Contradictions of control; Edgar: Civility; Babin, et al (2000): Schools as deliberative learning communities: Creating space for special education students. Mini-cases due. Home groups: list of classroom management issues that you want to address.

March 11  Setting up the classroom community: Issues of power and responsibility. William Glasser (1990), excerpts from The Quality School; Dreikurs, et al (1982), Maintaining Sanity in the Classroom, pp. 67-130.

Mar. 13   Problem-solving with students: Conducting class meetings. Taking stock. Froyen & Iverson (1999) Covenant management: Teacher and student relationships, pp. 239-260.


Finals Week & Spring Break - No classes.

April 1 Debrief CS #1. Classroom management. Case study #1 due.

Apr. 3  Classroom management cont. Assignment: Read Minicase book and categorize cases by problem type.  

Apr. 8  Motivation and classroom management. Colsant (1994): Why we gotta take this ...?!; Jigsaw: Nolen (1995): Teaching for autonomous learning; Turner, et al (1998): Creating contexts for involvement in mathematics.

Apr. 10 Working with special education students and teachers. Classes meet together in room 104. Guest speaker Hal Johnston (Seattle Public Schools). Solving individual behavior problems. Reading TBA

Apr. 15 Youth suicide prevention and postvention. Classes meet together in room 104. Guest speaker: Prof. Jim Mazza.

Apr. 17 Parent-teacher conferences. Kottler & Kottler (2000). Communicating with parents. 

Apr. 22 Adapting instruction for students with disabilities. Apr. 24 Working in urban settings: Guests: Students from Madrona School in Seattle. Ayers & Ford (1996): Urban pedagogy. Jigsaw: Busch (1995): Mathematics in the city; Haberman (1996): The pedagogy of poverty vs. good teaching; Billings (1996): The tree of knowledge.

Last day to hand in rewrites of case study #1: Thursday, April 24.

May 29  Linguistic Differences; ESL teaching strategies I.  Guest instructor Prof. Tom Stritikus.

June 3    ESL Teaching Strategies II. Guest instructor Prof. Tom Stritikus.

June 5    Final class meeting, debrief the course, course evaluations. Classroom management case study due to Sue by noon.

Finals Week:  No class meetings.

June 9 Adapted instruction case study due to Cinda.
