Jan. 13   Diversity in physical development, gender and sexuality.  Read Cole & Cole (1993): Biological and social foundations of adolescence; Schwartz & Karge (1996): Human Diversity, Chs. 5 and 8.

Jan. 15   Friendship development.  Read: Savin-Williams & Berndt (1990): Friendship and peer relations(+ page on Selman's theory of friendship development).

Jan. 20   Peer groups and peer culture.  Discuss upcoming field experience and Case Study #1 (Shadowing).   Read Finders (1997):  When you're in junior high, everything's differernt; Lee (1996): What's in a name? Asian identities at Academic High School.

Jan. 22   Being "different": Ethnic identity, disability and identity.  Read: Nelson-Barber & Harrison (1996): Bridging the politics of identity in a multicultural classroom; Stainback, et al. (1994): A commentary on inclusion and the development of a positive self-identity by people with disabilities; Wilson (1993): Misconceptions of self and identity;  Callahan (1997): Advice about being an LD student.

Jan. 27   Intro to Special Education: Laws, IEPs, categories.

Jan. 29    Special education placement.  In Banks & Banks, Ch 13: Heward & Cavanaugh (1997): Educational equality for students with disabilities;  Danforth & Rhodes (1997): Deconstructing disability.



February:  Field experience.  Case Study #1, Classroom management mini-cases

Mar. 3     Debrief the field experience.  Inclusion. Read: in Banks & Banks, Ch. 14: Meyer, Harry, & Sapon-Shevin (1997): School inclusion and multicultural issues in special education; N. Zigmond: Rethinking secondary school programs for students with learning disabilities; review Stainback, et al, from Jan. 22.

Mar. 5     Individual Difference and Adaptation:  Individual differences in cognitive and language development. Read: Adamson (1993): Academic competence,Ch 1 & 2; review Cole & Cole pp. 609-624 from EDTEP 561.  Guest speaker on ESL: Alex Shih.

Mar. 10    Instructional adaptations for cognitive differences. Adamson (1993): Academic competence, Ch 5; Assessment accommodations from the Commission on Student Learning; Edgar & Polloway (1994): Education for adolescents with disabilities: Curriculum and placement issues; Retish, et al (1991): Students with mild disabilities in the secondary school.Guest speaker on ESL: Alex Shih.

Mar. 12    Sexual harassment in schools; WEA video on appropriate teacher conduct.  Eder, et al (1995): Crude comments and sexual scripts.  Minicases due.

Apr. 6    Behavior modification (Skinner & others) and Assertive Discipline (Canter & Canter).  Edwards Ch. 2, 3 & 4.

Apr. 8    Assertive Disicpline, cont.; Logical consequences and democratic classroom management (Dreikurs).  Edwards Ch. 5.

Apr. 13    Dreikurs, cont.; Control theory and reality therapy (Glasser).  Edwards Ch. 8

Apr. 15    Choosing (and revising) a classroom discipline approach.  L. Colsant:  "Hey, man, why do we gotta take this . . .?"  Edwards Chapter 11-12 Last day to hand in rewrites of case study #1: Friday, April 17.


Apr. 20-May 15    Field experience.  Case Studies 2 & 3.

May 18    Debrief field experience.  Classroom management and adaptations review.

May 20-June 3   Various special topics: Guest speakers on: Teen pregnancy, parent conferences, suicide prevention, counseling students.  Readings TBA.

June 8     Helping students prepare for college.  Case studies 2 & 3 due.

All readings are in the reading packet or in the Edwards text: Classroom discipline and management, available in the bookstore, except those found in Banks & Banks (1997), Multicultural Education: Issues and perspectives, which you purchased Fall quarter for Multicultural Education.
