Current Issues in Educational
Communication and Technology
The course will meet on
these dates (all Thursdays, 1-2 pm, in 112 Miller) during Autumn Quarter, 2008:
Sept. 25
Oct. 9
Oct. 23
Nov. 6
Nov. 20
Dec. 4
As we have in the past,
we'll be running the course as a research seminar. That means that you should
plan to (either individually or jointly) present at least once during the
quarter on a topic of interest to you. This can either be your dissertation, or
a related piece of work that is connected with your ultimate research
interests.
Typically these
presentations are not exhaustive treatments of a topic; rather, they should be
an invitation for others to join you in thinking about question/s that are
puzzling for you or on which you're seeking to expand your own
understanding. The ideal is a brief
(5-10 min.) presentation by you to lead off and raise the issues, followed by
intensive discussion among the group.
To aid the discussion of
your presentation, it will be helpful to bring to class a handout (not more
than one page) with your questions and other relevant material. You should also plan to post articles,
information about relevant journals, professional groups and projects, etc., on
del.icio.us (edci589; password
"mi11er" -- two numeral-one's in the middle
instead of two letter-ell's).
The only other course
requirement is a brief (4-5 page) paper, due at the end of the course, in which
you describe in more detail the work you are doing, as well as the progress
you've made during the quarter in thinking about the issues involved. That paper will be due on Monday, Dec. 8 (the
start of the week after our last class meeting).
