Review of Literature – Criteria for Selection

 

These criteria were suggested in our class discussion on Apr. 29, 2008.  The list is not exhaustive nor would all of these necessarily apply in all cases.  Use and revise as you will!

 

The content:

            Relevance to message design generally

            Relevance and applicability to educational aspects of MD

            Graphical excellence (of the material, data cited; by someone's standards)

            Number of times the article has been cited by others

            Where the article has been indexed

            References – quality/quantity of those included in the article

 

The journal:

            Peer reviewed journal

            Sponsorship of the journal (professional association, society, etc.)

            Any details you can determine about the readership of the journal

 

The author:

            Author's reputation

            Author's institutional affiliation

            Place of the article in relation to author's other work

            Place of the author in respect to others working on similar topics

 

The context:

            Connections to projects, design efforts, other empirical studies (if mentioned in article)

            Citations of the article by respected sources

            Recency of the article (where relevant)

            Recency of the study/data cited
