Measuring the Growth of Village Children

UW junior Ross Nadal, with the help of Yangjuan native and high-school student Mgebbu Fagen, spent 10 days in July, 2002 beginning a survey of the nutrition and growth of Yangjuan's mothers and children. Ross and Fagen surveyed the previous day's nutritional intake of over 30 households, and weighed and measured 30 mothers, 10 fathers, and 74 children.
Here, Ross measures the arm circumference of the one-year old son of Ma Liangguo, with the father's help. When Ross's study is completed, we hope it will help the villagers of Yangjuan and Pianshui think of ways they can improve their diets while preserving the ecology of their native region.
