Today we consider what three experts, two of whose work we have been reading all quarter, say about the task ahead and the possibility of accomplishing it. First, read the rest of Weller's Discovering Nature. Then read the concluding chapter, "Looking ahead by looking back," in Smil's China's Past, China's Future. Finally, read the final chapter, Averting the Crisis, of Elizabeth Economy's The River Runs Black: The Environmental Challenge to China's Future.
Come to class ready to engage in a free-wheeling discussion of the prospects for China and the rest of the Earth.
