WEEK SEVEN ASSIGNMENT

Attend a religious service or religious event of some kind during the period from Thursday, May 15 through Tuesday, May 20. Assume the role of "passive participant" outlined on pages 59-60 of the article by Spradley. Since it may not be appropriate for you to take notes, you may have to make special efforts to remember what went on.

Write a 2-4 page typed description of the event you observed to be turned in at your section meeting on Tuesday, May 20 or Wednesday, May 21. Make sure to cover the following points:

What was the name of the organization, the name of the ritual, the place, time, and duration, and the number of people attending.

What went on in the ritual, from start to finish?  Did the structure conform to the structure of rituals that you heard analyzed in lecture, saw illustrated in Holy Ghost People, and discussed in sections?  If so, what elements corresponded to the structure of the ritual you saw, and what elements were different? If not, what was the structure of the ritual you observed?

Were participants in the ritual receiving "evidence of experience," as described in lecture and in the Rasmussen and Bogoras readings?  What did they do that led you to believe that they did or did not have this kind of religious experience?
