{"id":16,"date":"2013-10-16T16:45:45","date_gmt":"2013-10-16T16:45:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/faculty.washington.edu\/smgard\/wordpress\/?page_id=16"},"modified":"2023-12-08T05:46:13","modified_gmt":"2023-12-08T05:46:13","slug":"research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/faculty.washington.edu\/smgard\/wordpress\/research\/","title":{"rendered":"Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Steve&#8217;s current research focuses on global environmental problems (especially climate change), future generations, and virtue ethics.<\/p>\n<p>Steve is the author of<em> A Perfect Moral Storm: the Ethical Tragedy of Climate Change<\/em> (Oxford, 2011), and co-author of <em>Dialogues on Climate Justice<\/em> (Routledge, 2023) and <em>Debating Climate Ethics<\/em> (Oxford, 2016). He is also the editor of the <em>Oxford Handbook of Intergenerational Ethics<\/em> (Oxford, in press) and\u00a0<em>Virtue Ethics: Old and New <\/em>(Cornell, 2005), coordinating co-editor of <em>The Ethics of &#8220;Geoengineering&#8221; the Global Climate: Justice, Legitimacy and Governance<\/em> (Routledge, 2020) and\u00a0<em>Climate Ethics: Essential Readings<\/em> (Oxford, 2011), and joint co-editor of the <em>Oxford Handbook of Environmental Ethics<\/em> (Oxford, 2016).<\/p>\n<p>Steve has published more than fifty articles, on a diverse range of topics including climate justice, the ethics of geoengineering, the precautionary principle in international law, nuclear protection, Aristotle\u2019s basic and nonbasic virtues, and Socrates\u2019 pessimism about politics.\u00a0 His work has appeared in leading general journals in philosophy (e.g., <em>Ethics, Ethics &amp; International Affairs, Journal of Political Philosophy, Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy, Philosophy &amp; Public Affairs<\/em>), top environmental journals (e.g., <em>Climatic Change, <\/em><em>Environmental Ethics, Ethics, Policy &amp; Environment, Environmental Values<\/em>), and edited volumes from major publishers (e.g., <em>Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Routledge<\/em>). A number have been reprinted in standard textbooks and collections. \u00a0(For downloads, see &#8216;Links&#8217;.)<\/p>\n<p>Much of Steve\u2019s work has a broad and interdisciplinary audience.\u00a0 For example, it has been cited by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine&#8217;s report on governing geoengineering,\u00a0the National Research Council\u2019s report on America\u2019s Climate Choices, and the U.K. Treasury\u2019s Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change. \u00a0He is also often interviewed by the media, including in the past by the <em>Australian Broadcasting Corporation<\/em>, the <em>British Broadcasting Corporation<\/em> (UK, Brazil, Nigeria), <em>CNBC<\/em>,\u00a0<em>China Radio International<\/em>, <em>Der Standard<\/em> (Austria), the <em>Guardian (UK)<\/em>,\u00a0<em>National Public Radio<\/em>, <em>Scientific American<\/em>, the <em>Seattle Times<\/em>, the <em>Sunday Times<\/em> (of London), <em>Volkskrant<\/em> (the Netherlands), the <em>Washington Post<\/em>, and the <em>Weather Channel<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Steve&#8217;s past research has been supported by (among others) the <em>Leverhulme Trust <\/em>and the <em>National Science Foundation. <\/em>He is currently part of a project on the Ethics of Net Zero supported by\u00a0the <em>Australian Research Council<\/em>.
