Research Paper

LIS528/MEDED570

Winter Quarter 2006

Choose a group of health professionals/practitioners (e.g. nurse practitioners, family practitioners, dentists, anesthesiologists, basic sciences researcher,  etc.).     Develop a research report, with the components outlined below,  to include the rationale for designing  a new information product or service.    If you wish to propose an alternative topic (e.g. information needs of patients, health consumers)   please talk to Sherri EARLY in the quarter.  It is vital to identify your target health professional early in the quarter so that you can utilize assignments during the quarter to work on components of the final assignment.

Required components of report:

1. Educational requirements.

2. Practice description (i.e. what do they DO?)

3. Current problems/issues facing that profession (e.g. external factors, economic, technological, licensure, competition from other professions etc.)

4.  Past information needs studies/analyses -- findings (of this or similar relevant group)

5. Outline steps you would take in creating a product or service to meet the needs of this particular group including rationale.

6. Outline approach to evaluate and measure the effectiveness of this service.

7. Bibliography of resources consulted

This should not be a lengthy paper -- no more than 10 pages.   DO include brief descriptions of 1-4 but also include bibliographic references useful in further answering these questions.   It is not necessary to describe the service in detail but rather you need to document HOW you would determine what service or product would best meet the needs of this user group.

Be sure to define specific health professional group (e.g. clinical pharmacist, operating room nurse, environmental health specialist, etc.)  CHECK WITH ME REGARDING CHOSEN GROUP BEFORE YOU BEGIN WORK ON THIS PROJECT.

Be prepared to provide 15 minute overview to class toward end of quarter (see class schedule for dates).  Please plan to create a WEB page based on your paper, including the bibliography to share with the rest of the class.    We can all learn a lot from each other through this assignment!!!!
