XII.    Hopeful Resources – On Hope, Activism, and Examples of Positive Change

Bounce me down to the bibliography citations

What’s Here

This bibliography is concerned with disturbing environmental and social trends, along with the potential to make things better and the risks if we don’t.  This section provides links to hopeful resources. If you are looking for articles and web sites that can make you feel better about our future and provide some inspiration, then this is the section for you.

Subsection A provides links to articles, along with a few reports, books, and videos.  Subsection B features links to web sites of organizations that are doing inspirational work and/or provide hopeful and useful resources.

FYI - I have been encouraging students to read the articles by Durning, Orr, and Steffen for years and I think it helps counterbalance the onslaught of bad news and dire projections.  I am going to be adding many more of these articles and web sites as reading options in my courses, particularly the Robson article and this list in subsection B below of web sites of organizations doing good works.  We have to share tales of inspiration and identify communities for positive engagement so we can feel connected and empowered in this fight for our future.  In this way we can:

-          shake off feelings of isolation, apathy, and despair,

-          collectively kick some necessary booty, and

-          weave together a new cultural story to live.

Hope is not prognostication.  It is an orientation of the spirit, an orientation of the heart; it transcends the world that is immediately experienced, and is anchored somewhere beyond its horizons…

Hope, in this deep and powerful sense, is not the same as joy that things are going well… but, rather, an ability to work for something because it is good.

--- Vaclav Havel
