Paper Assignment 2

Please choose one of the following paper topics:

1. In the introduction to Neighbors, Jan Gross argues that his book shows
that the terms "perpetrators," "victims," and "bystanders" are "fuzzy." Further,
he says that the book "can be read as a reminder that each episode of mass killing
had its own situational dynamics." In what ways does the book show the terms to
be fuzzy? What seems distinctive about the situational dynamics of the mass
killing in Jedwabne?

2. In the introduction to Neighbors, Jan Gross claims that his book "cannot
be easily located on the functionalist-intentionalist spectrum." Explain why it
cannot.
