Course Overview
The purpose of the course is to help you develop as a writer of poetry. To that end, we will spend nearly all our time this quarter working to develop your awareness of and your resourcefulness with the six elements of poetry: line, syntax, diction, trope, rhetoric (or argument) and rhythm. In the process, you will write poems employing various meters, various stanza and rhyme patterns, counted forms and free verse.
In addition to writing poems, you will read them, analyze them, listen to
poets living and dead reading their poems, memorize and recite poems, and
critique one another’s' poems.
