The Fast Multipole Method: Something Old and Something New

The fast multipole method combines the addition theorems of classical potential theory with modern concepts of multiscale analysis to produce an elegant algorithm for calculating potential fields.

This talk will provide an overview of the mathematical and algorithmic methods that lead to fast solutions to a diverse set of problems including wave propagation and scattering, fluid flow, and the collision of galaxies.
