There might be tens of thousands of photographs taken of you in your lifetime, but there will be only one "last" photograph. It will be unique. It will provide the only visual proof that you existed on that date as your identifiable image becomes inextricably linked with an exact time and place. You will not know the significance of the image at that precise moment since only your death can bestow the memorial status. The final image might be a formal studio portrait but more likely it will be an unremarkable digital likeness added to the recording tape in a surveillance camera system. A cash machine, a drive-though window, a hotel lobby and a freeway toll booth, all monitor your life and stand ready to provide the ironic and demeaning last "photo op".You can only hope that your rictus smile is in full view.
It is my hope to arrange a digital death with dignity for myself by posting a daily potential "last photograph" on my personal memorial web page. Perhaps this image will allow me to avoid the ignominy of the security camera infested world we all inhabit. With any luck at all this might just be my last photograph. |
