A sample of courses I have designed and taught:

o Cognition in Contexts (EDPSY 581a). This interdisciplinary course introduces students to ethnographic research about cognition in homes, play, work, and the informal spaces of school. Seminar readings are complemented by field activities that exemplify core themes in the course readings.

o Technology in Context (ED C&1 580). This course explores ways that researchers have conceptualized the relationship between people and machines, especially as it relates to issues of education and learning. Theoretical perspectives include activity theory, actor-network theory, and distributed cognition. Seminar readings are complemented by field activities and a small-scale ethnographic project studying “technology in context.”

o Design-based Research Methods in Education (EDC&I 581 and 582, co-designed and co-taught with Phil Bell) This two-quarter course was modeled on the Qualitative Methods course I teach. In the first quarter, students design an educational intervention while reading various interdisciplinary formulations on educational design. In the second quarter, students pilot their intervention in a real-world educational setting and analyze the results from a qualitative perspective.

o Discourse in the Disciplines (EDPSY 583) This course explore readings on different subjects and disciplines in order to comparatively understand the different ways that disciplines make and represent knowledge, particularly through talk, text, and visual representation.

o Interaction Analysis in Educational Research (EDPSY 581b). This course is an introduction to microethnographic and discourse-analytic studies of education and learning. Reading span classic formulations of interactional studies, early studies in education and contemporary work. The course combines readings with weekly in-class joint analysis sessions. The final project for the course is a small-group analysis of student-selected interactional data.
