{"id":2,"date":"2016-10-14T23:06:43","date_gmt":"2016-10-14T23:06:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/faculty.washington.edu\/rcichows\/wordpress\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2024-03-18T20:30:59","modified_gmt":"2024-03-18T20:30:59","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/faculty.washington.edu\/rcichows\/","title":{"rendered":"Rachel Cichowski"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"color: #000000; float: left; margin: 0px 50px 0px 0px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/faculty.washington.edu\/rcichows\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/CichowskiPhoto.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/faculty.washington.edu\/rcichows\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Cichowski_small.jpg\" alt=\"Rachel Cichowski\" width=\"199\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Current Position<\/strong>: Cichowski is Chair and Professor in the Department of Political Science and\u00a0 Professor in the Law, Societies and Justice Department at the University of Washington. \u00a0She is Adjunct Faculty in the School of Law, Department of Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies and a member of the European Studies Faculty at UW.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Visiting Positions:<\/strong> \u00a0Her visiting research positions include Visiting Scholar at the Department of Constitutional Law\u00a0 &amp; Politics, University of Barcelona (2018); Visiting Scholar at the Laboratory on International Law &amp; Regulation, School of Global Policy &amp; Strategy, UCSD (2015-16); Program Director and Visiting Professor at the UW Rome Center, Rome, Italy (2003, 2005); Visiting Fellow Max Planck Institute, Bonn, Germany (2000); and Visiting Research Fellow, European University Institute, Florence, Italy (1998-99).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research Interests<\/strong>: Her primary research interests include international law and organization, transnational legal mobilization, comparative constitutionalism, and transnational activism and social movements. \u00a0She specializes in large n data collection and qualitative approaches to law and social science research methods and design. \u00a0Cichowski&#8217;s area expertise includes human rights, global women&#8217;s rights, environmental protection and climate change, and European law and politics.\u00a0 Current projects include, <em><strong>Legal Mobilization and International Justice<\/strong>, <\/em>which is funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=1322161&amp;HistoricalAwards=false\">National Science Foundation (SES 1322161)<\/a>, and is an unparalleled historical analysis of European Court of Human Rights judgments examining the roles of interest and advocacy organizations in\u00a0the development and protection of human rights over a sixty year period. The project includes a state of the art database,\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/echrdb\/\">European Court of Human Rights Database (ECHRdb)<\/a><\/u>.\u00a0 She is also coPI on the collaborative project entitled\u00a0<em>Building Dynamic Research Communities in Global Legal Studies<\/em>\u00a0(with D. Brinks UT Austin and J. Staton Emory, funded by NSF SES # 1748180). Her books include <strong><em>The European Court and Civil Society<\/em> <\/strong>(Cambridge University Press, <em>winner of the APSA Best Book Award, European Politics &amp; Society Section)<\/em> and <strong><em>Law, Politics and Society<\/em><\/strong> (co-editor, Oxford University Press). \u00a0She has edited and her research appears in various\u00a0edited volumes and journals including<em> Law &amp; Society Review,<\/em> <em>Comparative Political\u00a0Studies<\/em>, <em>Journal of European Public Policy<\/em> and <em>Women &amp; Politics<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Teaching Interests:<\/strong> Cichowski teaches undergraduate, PhD and JD students and her courses include comparative law and politics, applied research in law and courts, international justice, international law &amp; organization, and global women&#8217;s rights.<\/p>\n<p style=\"align: left; margin: 0px 40px 40px 10px;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Current Position: Cichowski is Chair and Professor in the Department of Political Science and\u00a0 Professor in the Law, Societies and Justice Department at the University of Washington. \u00a0She is Adjunct Faculty in the School of Law, Department of Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies and a member of the European Studies Faculty at UW.
