Course Description

• Overview
  I have two goals for the course: (1) That the students shall leave the course with a working knowledge of the mechanics of integral calculus and (2) that the students exit the course understanding the conceptual ideas which lie behind calculus and are able to use this understanding to apply integral calculus to problems in a variety of contexts.
  
  I anticipate covering the following topics during the course; section numbers refer to the course text, the sixth edition of Calculus: Early Trancendentals by Stewart.
  • Area Approximation: Riemann sums, other approximation methods (§ 5.1-2, 7.7)
  • Anti-derivatives and the fundamental theorem of calculus (§ 4.9, 5.2-4, 6.1)
  • Techniques of integration (§ 5.5, 7.1-7.6)
  • Geometric application of integrals (§ 6.1-3, 6.5, 7.8, 8.1-2)
  • Application to other disciplines (§ 6.4, 8.3-5)
  • Application to differential equations (selected from Ch. 9)


• Homework and Exams
  Each Tuesday I will assign homework assignments for you to complete at home; I will not collect the homework. However on the following Tuesday, there will be a quiz based on the homework material.
  
  In preparation for the weekly quiz, each Thursday there will be a short check-in during which you will be asked to complete a problem or two in a quiz-like atmosphere. Credit will be given for making a reasonable attempt on this check-in. Furthermore there will be frequent in-class activities designed to give you additional practice and feedback.
  
  There will be two hour-long exams and a final exam. The final exam will be administered during the normally scheduled time; the hour-long exams will be administered during class and will be announced at least one week prior to the exam dates. Tentatively, I would like to give the exams during the fourth and eighth week of the term.


• Grades
  Grades will be based on a percentage of points earned on coursework, weighted as follows:
  • Quizzes and Activities: 40%
  • Hour Exams: 30%
  • Final Exam: 30%
  I convert numerical scores to letter grades using the scale A: 90-100%, B: 80-89%, etc. It is my intention that such conversion between numerical scores and letter grades be consistent with the following:
  1. Outstanding or excellent work that goes beyond analysis of course material to synthesize concepts in a valid way.
  2. Very good work that analyzes the material explored in class and includes a reasonable attempt to synthesize that material.
  3. Adequate work that satisfies the requirements of each assignment and includes a limited analysis of material explored in class.
  4. Passing work that is minimally adequate and raises serious concern about readiness to continue in the field.
  5. Failing work that is inadequate, and unworthy of credit.
  
  In keeping with my desire to assign grades based upon these descriptions, I reserve the right to adjust your grade, at my discretion, based upon class attendance, signs of improvement, inconsistent coursework (such as disregarding a score which significantly differs from all others), or other factors.
