Course Description

• Overview
  This is a first course in differential calculus. If you are not sure what that means, but have a good understanding of functions, particularly logarithmic and trigonometric functions, then you are in the right place. We will be discussing mostly the mathematical machinery of calculus, but will also see some applications to other fields, especially in the sciences.
  
  Attendance is mandatory for this class. Math is a cumulative subject and it is difficult to make up for lost class time. Complete reading and homework assignments before coming to class, so that class time can be a productive as possible. Your participation in class is important for learning - please come prepared to listen and to ask questions!
  
  I expect you to spend considerable time and effort learning Calculus outside the classroom. Homework is part of this outside work. Another part is re-reading notes from class in order to make sure you understand everything that happened, and taking the time to figure it out if you do not understand. I strongly encourage you to take advantage of office hours if you have questions, no matter how big or small.


• Homework, Quizzes, Exams
  Each day I will provide a list of exercises for you to complete at home. Sometimes there will be a portion of the class time devoted to working on these problems. Each Monday I will collect a subset of these problems. At that time there will be a short quiz related to the problems assigned the previous week.
  
  There will be an hour-long mid-term exam and a cumulative final exam (at the officially scheduled time during finals week). The exam dates will be announced in class, and listed on the course website, at least one week prior to the admimistration of each exam. There are no make-up quizzes or exams; if you believe extenuating circumstances justify an exception to this policy, please contact me as early as possible.


• Grades
  Grades will be based on a percentage of points earned on coursework, weighted as follows:
  • Homework & Quizzes: 30%
  • Mid-Term Exam: 30%
  • Final Exam: 40%
  I reserve the right to adjust your grade, at my discretion, based upon class attendance, signs of improvement, inconsistent coursework (such as disregarding a score which significantly differs from all others), or other factors.

  • Techniques for computing limits (factoring, etc)
• Continuity
  • Definition of continuous (using limits).
  • How to prove functions are continuous using the definition.
  • The Intermediate Value Theorem
• Derivatives
  • Two equivalent definitions involving limits.
  • How to compute f'(x) using the definition (ie, the limit of the difference quotient)
  • What the derivative function means in terms of the original function, including applications such as equations of tangent lines, etc.
  • Newton's notation & Liebnitz's notation.
  • Differentiation rules: sum/difference, constant, product/quotient, etc.
  • Shortcut rules: polynomials, e^x, ln x, trig functions, etc.
  • Hyperbolic functions
  • The Chain Rule
