Modeling the Salish Sea
The goal of this project is to provide the first ever high-resolution, realistic hindcast simulations of the physical circulation in the entire Salish Sea region. The project is part of the UW campus-wide initiative Puget Sound Regional Synthesis Model (PRISM) with additional funding support from the National Science Foundation, NOAA, and the G. Unger Vetlesen Foundation.
The Salish Sea encompasses Puget Sound, the Strait of Georgia, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and the coastal waters of Washington, Oregon, and Vancouver Island. We wish to understand the links between the sound and the sea, as well as provide useful information to the public on water properties and circulation features within Puget Sound. Ultimately, we will also model the functioning of the ecosystem within the Salish Sea, coupling the hydrodynamic model to a biological box model.
