Assignment and grading details:

Class Participation (20%); every class

This subjective grade is based on my assessment of your involvement in class discussions. Graduate students registered for Archy 525 must also be prepared to present 5-10 minute summaries of the additional readings to the rest of the class as part of this grade.

Discussion Questions (20%); every class with reading assignments

The class will be divided into two groups who will alternate asking and responding to questions based on readings (for days with scheduled readings). “Questioners” must submit one question to the discussion board (click on Discussion) by 10:00 PM on the day before class (i.e. Sunday and Tuesday afternoons). “Responders” can choose any question they like from that group and provide a response on-line, by 10:00 PM on the day before the subsequent class meeting. Late submissions will not receive credit.

Geography quiz (10%); Wednesday, January 18

This 45-minute geography quiz will test your knowledge of place names, significant sites and cultural, geographical and climatic features of the Island Southeast Asia-Pacific region. All material will have been covered in class, in the required readings or in handouts.

Position paper (20%); Wednesday, February 8

You will write a position paper (4-6 pages, double spaced), taking a stand on the question “From where did the ancestors of contemporary Polynesian people come?” Hard copy due by the beginning of class on Feb. 8. Click here for detailed paper guidelines.

Final paper (30%); abstract: Wednesday February 13, final paper: Friday, March 10

This can be on any topic that interests you as long as it includes archaeology and is specific to geographical regions covered in the course. You must submit a preliminary title and approximately 50 word abstract (hard copy) by the beginning of class on Feb. 13. Final paper should be 10-15 double-spaced pages not including bibliography, title page or figures (min and max length strictly enforced), and use one of the citation and bibliography formats used in archaeological publications. Papers can be submitted via email (to plape@u.washington.edu) as MS Word or pdf attachments or in hard copy and are due by 5:00 PM on March 10. If you send papers electronically, you must get an email confirmation from me that I have received and can read your attachment. Archy 525 students must also complete a short (approx. 10 minute) oral presentation of their papers on Wednesday March 8. If you want your final paper returned to you, please indicate how I should do that, and include a stamped addressed envelope if you want it mailed to you.
