Final Projects
ARCHY 469a: History and Archaeology
University of
Washington--Spring 2001
There are two final project options. 1) You
can choose a project of your choice involving your own research or area of
interest. The project should involve one of the topics considered in the class,
and should ideally involve work with more than one class of primary data
(archaeological, documentary, oral history). 2) You can join a group project
that involves re-interpreting an archaeological site using archaeological
materials and documents at the Burke museum, along with other documentary and
oral history sources.
I encourage collaborative projects, and those
that experiment with alternatives to a standard seminar paper (though solo projects
and seminar papers are also fine). For graduate students, I also encourage you
to consider writing for publication, or work on your own research that will
move you towards your degree (such as a research proposal or dissertation
chapters).
On Tuesday, April 17, the class
will meet at the Burke Museum (assemble by the reception desk inside the
loading dock area of the Burke, at the rear of the building) to have an initial
look at the materials available there. Beginning on Thursday, April 26,
every Thursday class will be a project workshop. We will all meet briefly at
the Burke for progress updates, and then either stay to work on Burke materials
or conduct work elsewhere.
Project proposals consisting of a
1-2 page statement about your project are due at the beginning of class on Tuesday
April 24. These should include a brief introduction to the project, and
describe what you plan to deliver at the end of the quarter for your final
project grade. If you are working on a collaborative project, you can submit a single
proposal for the group, but each individual’s role should be clearly defined. This
proposal will serve as a contract between you and the instructor regarding the
final project and my evaluation of it. If you decide to significantly change
your project after you submit your proposal, you must notify me in writing
about the changes (a short email is sufficient) and get my approval of the
changes.
The Final Project “product” as
defined in your proposal is due on Friday June 1 at 5 PM in my mailbox
in the Burke Museum, or via electronic submission.
