Discussion of hypotheses/papers
Aim 1 paper 1
- Evaluate and compare various measures of SES at individual and aggregate level, which could either be self reported or objective and assess their association with health outcomes. Based on recent discussions with Adam and Anne,
- Potential dependent variable is ‘perceived health status’.
- Potential independent variables include
- Self reported individual level – income and education
- Self reported aggregate level – census
- Objective individual level – property values
- Objective aggregate level – area based measures (Mean (?) assessed property value per dwelling unit)

individual | aggregate | |
subjective | income, education | census deprivation |
objective | dwelling unit value | mean (median?) dwelling unit value per tract |
Aim 1 paper 2
- Is diet quality determined by where people shop for groceries and distance to the grocery store? As part of this paper, we plan to first characterize respondents by store type and objective measure of distance to the store reported by them.
- Potential dependent variable is diet quality defined as “5 a day”
- Potential independent variables include
- Distance (airline, network, time) to the primary grocery store reported UFL required to provide data to Theresa
- Also need closest supermarket
- Store type (Safeway, FM, QFC, Albertsons, Whole Foods)
- SES variables
- Distance (airline, network, time) to the primary grocery store reported UFL required to provide data to Theresa
- Note: look at
- you are where you shop
- Morland et al paper
