In panel 1, "How they were renovating a church and placed the image of Holy Mary under the portal," a familiar activity is well depicted. On the right hand half of the miniature four masons are portrayed in various facets of their work. Three wear leather, broadbrimmed hats to protect their heads from falling mortar. One wears on his head only a white kerchief, the most frequently depicted male headgear in the Cantigus. Color in this panel lies in the blue and pink garments of the masons, and in the robes of the Virgin and the Child, as well as in Their crowns and haloes. One mason mixes mortar with a spade, another sends buckets of it up to a fellow worker who uses a pulley, while the fourth man lays blocks of stone. (Keller, p. 26-27) Panel 2
