The Pauzauskie lab’s central focus is on basic materials science and engineering research into the design, synthesis, and characterization of nanoscale optoelectronic materials with unique compositions and morphologies.  The group’s ultimate goal is to help answer challenging questions in the biomedical, information technology, and renewable energy sectors by understanding how a material’s atomistic structure impacts subsequent properties and long-term performance.  Group members employ a number of experimental and computational techniques including nanowire synthesis via metal assisted chemical etching, air-sensitive solution phase synthesis of ternary inorganic nanocrystals, x-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, synchrotron radiation (NEXAFS, STXM, XRD), three-dimensional laser trapping, optical spectroscopy, cell culturing, nonlinear least squares data analysis, as well as finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) and finite-element computational methods for the design and simulation of multifunctional nanoscale optoelectronic materials.
