SPEAKER: Prof. Marjorie Olmstead Department of Physics University of Washington TITLE: "Structure, Symmetry and Stoichiometry: Controlling Heteroepitaxy" ABSTRACT: Macroscopic properties of layered electronic materials are determined in large part by atomic-scale interactions during interface formation. In the interesting case of Ga-Se compounds, we have observed multiple stoichiometries and crystal structures depending on the choice of substrate symmetry, lattice mismatch, and growth conditions. Interface compounds governing overlayer growth display interesting physics in their own right, which we have probed with photoelectron spectroscopy and diffraction.
