Instructions for Graduate Students:

The purpose of a Ph.D. examination is to develop broad competence in an area of study in preparation for university teaching. In addition students are encouraged to tailor their fields to accord with their research interests. Graduate Students will be expected to develop individualized reading lists in consultation with me. The examination will require both knowledge of specific arguments and schools of thought as well as a rationale for how a particular reading list was constructed.
