The Case of Dave: Part 2
Dave now has AIDS. He has been unable to work for over two years, has used up all his savings and has no health care insurance. Dave lives alone and his safety is becoming a concern. He is becoming increasingly listless and is not able to carry out basic activities of daily living independently. He has frequent headaches, poor coordination, and is showing signs of cognitive deterioration. Dave has suffered from repeated episodes of oral candidiasis, nausea, anorexia, and diarrhea, and is very emaciated. He has lesions on his palate, gingiva, and facial skin. One of the lesions on the palate is extremely painful. He has also developed severe bone loss around several of his teeth He currently has bilateral pneumonia, a fever, and increasing dyspnea. Admission to hospital or a hospice unit has been discussed with Dave and appears imminent.
