The Case of Dave: Part I
Dave is a 20-year-old male who is being seen at your clinic for the first time. He is asking to be tested for AIDS after being encouraged by friends to do so. Dave states he is feeling 'OK' at this point. As he is asked flirther questions, Dave admits that over the last four months he has had a chest cold, and episodes of sore throat, fever, and muscle ache. He then states that what is bothering him now is 'canker sores' in his mouth that won't go away, very painflil gums and a weird metallic taste that he can't get rid of even though he brushes his teeth.
Dave seems reluctant to give detailed answers during his history taking and is very concerned that the information he gives remains confidential. He asks what will happen to him if he has AIDS.
Dave was very involved in gang activities and drugs as a teenager but is trying to put that behind him and start a new life. He is currently working at ajob that pays only slightly more than minimum wage. His position there is not secure as he has little seniority and there is talk of layoffs coming soon. Dave really wants to keep his job as he did not complete high school and has no formal training or skills. He has had many jobs in the past that have not worked out for him and he believes he has finally found a workplace where he could have a tiature.
Dave is currently living in an old, rundown house with several other friends. He has not had any contact with his parents for years and states that he does not want to have anything to do with them. He has no siblings.
Dave comes back to the clinic for a second appointment to find out the results of his HIV testing. He is extremely anxious.
Dave's test results show he is HIV positive.
