VANCOMYCIN-RESISTANT ENTEROCOCCUS


Enterococcus species include E. faecium, E. faecalis

Retrospective series of 54 pts with clinically sig. VRE vs. vancomycin-sensitive enterococcus found (Clin. Inf. Dis 22:663, 1996-JW):

  • Most associated with peritoneal or biliary tract infection
  • Pts with VRE required sig. more surgical drainage of infection
  • Also had more recurrent bacteremias and higher in-hosp. mortality (57% vs. 35%; sig.)
  • Tx options as of 2000: Quinupristin/Dalfopristin, Linezolid
