1000 elderly (summary didn't say how elderly) pts with hip fx or CVA tx'd at 92 rehab facilities and nursing homes in 17 states; the study followed them for 6 months. Multivariate analysis adjusting for differences in clinical features and functional status showed that pts with CVA treated at rehab hospitals were > 3x as likely to return to community in f/u period as pts sent to nursing homes. No diff. in outcome for pts with hip fx. Subacute NH pts more likely to return to community than traditional NH patients. (JAMA 277:396, 1997-JW)
