NUTS FOR PREVENTION OF CAD


Nurses' Health Study looked at a prospective cohort of 86,000 women 34-59yo at study entry. Women who ate > 5oz/wk of nuts had RR of 0.65 for CAD c/w those eating < 1oz/mo; association maintained after adjusting for age, smoking, and other known CAD risk factors, and intake of dietary fats, fiber, vegetables, and fruits. Relationship persisted in subgroups startified by smoking, dyslipidemia, EtOH use, use of MVI and vit. E supplements, and exercise. (BMJ 317:1341, 1998--JW)
