MONOCLONAL GAMMOPATHIES AND MYELOMA
I. Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS)
- Defined as serum monoclonal Ig concentration 3g/dl or lower
and no other evidence of multiple myeloma or related disorders.
- In pts with MGUS, 10y incidence of progression to multiple
myeloma, lymphoma, or other serious disorders in one prospective study was
6% for those with initial monoclonal protein concentration of 0.5 g/dL or
lower and 34% among those with initial monoclonal protein concentration of
2.51-3.0 g/dL.
- Prevalence was 1.7% in community-dwellers 50-59yo and 6.6%
in those > 80yo in one community-based study (NEJM 354:1362, 2006--JW)
