I. Definitions and pathophysiology

  1. Defined as a set of metabolic risk factors:
    1. Abdominal obesity
    2. Hyperglycemia (e.g. fasting glucose 100mg/dL or greater)
    3. Dyslipidemia (including high triglycerides and/or low HDL)
    4. Hypertension (e.g. untreated BP 130/85 or greter)
  2. Associated with risk for coronary artery disease and type 2 DM
  3. Sometimes also refered to aqs "syndrom X", "insulin resistance syndrome", and "obesity-dyslipidemia syndrome"

II. Management focuses on treating the individual risk factors
