Accelerated atherosclerosis leads to coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, and peripheral vascular disease, leading to much of the mortality due to NIDDM
- "Silent [myocardial] ischemia" may be common with NIDDM due to sensory neuropathy
- Excess risk of CAD in women with NIDDM greater than in men with NIDDM
- Prevention consists of controlling other risk factors and of controlling glucose, although the latter not proven as of 1997 to be connected to macrovascular complications of NIDDM (unlike microvascular complications)
Hyperinsulinemia may play as important a role as hyperglycemia
