401 pts with clinically localized but intermediate- or high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (75% had diffuse large-cell lymphoma; 2/3 stage I, 1/3 stage II) randomized to 8 cycles of CHOP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone) vs. 3 cycles of CHOP then radiotherapy; Combined tx group had sig. higher 5y progression-free survival (77% vs. 64%) and overall survival (82% vs. 72%) (NEJM 339:21, 1998--JW)

Tumor vaccines for lymphoma--proteins unique to the pt's tumor cells are isolated, attached to an adjuvant protein, and administered to the pt by injection with GM-CSF to enhance the immune response, usually during remission following chemotherapy in which tumor cells are found to persist at low levels (Nature Med. 5:1171, 1999--JW)
