INTESTINAL MALROTATION


  • Nl. rotation of gut occurs in 6-8th week of gestation, as gut moves inf. into abdomen
  • Prevents with vague sx, often in 1st mo. of life--distention, abd. pain, vom
  • Specific types:
    1. Ladd's bands--cecum in RUQ; bands from cecum to lat. perit. wall or liver; cross & can obstruct duodenum
    2. Volvulus (serious emergency)--occurs in 1/3 kids with malrotation
    3. Duodenojejunal adhesions--form because of abnormal folding of small intestine; can cause obstruction
