IN-HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT OF DIABETES

Regarding "sliding scales":

171 diabetic adults hosp'd for nonsurgical conditions were prospectively observed. 37% were on sliding scale reg. insulin 4x/d with no oral or intermediate-acting insulin. The others had oral or intermediate-acting insulin without a sliding scale. Those on sliding scale were sig. more likely to have hyperglycemic episodes than those on longer-acting regimens; no ass'n between regimen and indicence of hypoglycemia. (Arch. Int. Med 157:545, 1997-JW)
