EDINBURGH POSTNATAL DEPRESSION SCALE


Usually given in writing.
Questions are all to be answered by selecting the answer that comes closest to how the patient has felt in the prior 7 days

  1. I have been able to laugh and see the funny side of things
  2. I have looked forward with enjoyment to things
  1. I have blamed myself unnecessarily when things went wrong
  2. I have been anxious or worried for no good reason
  3. I have felt scared or panicky for no very good reason
  4. Things have been getting on top of me
  5. I have been so unhappy that I have had difficulty sleeping
  6. I have felt sad or miserable
  7. I have been so unhappy that I have been crying
  8. The thought of harming myself has occurred to me
Scoring: All are scored 0-3 with more severe responses given higher #'s
Scores above 13 are associated with high likelihood of a depressive illness
Pay particular attention to item 10, which deals with suicidal thoughts
