CONGENITAL UMBILICAL ABNORMALITIES
Umbilical granuloma--degenerating, oozing end of cut
cord; can be confused with urachal fistula; tx with AgNO3
Umbilical hernia--more common in blacks, preemies; they
never incarcerate and us. close spont. by age 2; is
persist, close surgically (n.b. if present in adulthood,
can incarcerate)
Omphalocele--defect in abd. wall so that rectii don't
meet; no skin over defect, eviscerated guts covered with
fused amnion/peritoneum, from which the cord comes out.
Surg. correction is imperative
Gastroschisis--similar to omphalocele, but no membrane,
us. a small defect, to right of umbilicus
