CATARACTS

Etiology: age, trauma, DM, chronic uveitis, exogenous steroids, ciliary body tumors, metastatic Ca, congenital rubella

Statins may reduce the incidence of nuclear cataracts per one observational study (JAMA 295:2752, 2006--JW) but were associated with increased risk in a prospective cohort study in about 225,000 pts 35-74yo starting statins (RR 1.25-1.56 depending on the specific drug; NNH over 5y 33-40 for women and 52-66 for men depending on baseline cardiovascular risk scores) (BMJ 340:c2197, 2010)
