AMBLYOPIA
- Definition = impairment of vision in an eye without a detectable organic
lesion.
- aka "lazy eye," the implication being that an image is
appropriately focused on the retina and relayed to the visual cortex but
not processed.
- One practical definition is a discrepancy of 2 or more lines between
the eyes on Snellen testing, in the presence of a condition known to
cause amblyopia
- Associated conditions
- Anisometropia
- Strabismus (eyes not pointing in the same direction; Cover-Uncover
test can help detect)
- Ametropia
- Others
- Traditionally treated by patching the "good" eye; alternatively
atropine drops in the "good" eye
