This special topics seminar is focused on the Application of Geostatistics in Earth Science Research.  The course is ideally suited for those students who seek to develop more in-depth skills and an advanced understanding of the concepts behind modern tools for detecting, describing, and estimating spatial patterns and trends.  The course specifically addresses ways of investigating the spatial continuity that is an essential feature of natural phenomena.  Topics will included; univariate and bivariate spatial description, autocorrelation and cross-correlation, variograms and heterogeneous distributions, quantifying spatial pattern, and estimations of spatial processes.  While we will avoid in depth mathematical formality and primary computer code development, some familiarity with math notation and basic scripting language will be useful.  A strong foundation in the tools found in commercial Geographic Information System software and spatial analysis packages such as ESRI™ ArcGIS is required.
