Introductory Research Assignment

Goldberg: Discovery Core Autumn 2006
Updated: 01/13/02

This is a simple research assignment meant to introduce you to some of the basics of Web-based research before we let you loose on the entire "information universe," which includes but goes far beyond the Internet (which includes the Web but is not the same as the Web. Got it?). For this assignment, you will be applying some skills you've learned from reading the assigned NMHH chapters for this week, along with any info lit smarts you've picked up in your past education. Your assignment is to choose one full-time UWB professor or instructor and research their background, emphasizing their professional lives but including personal information that you feel provides your classmates with a good understanding of this person as a teacher and scholar with whom you might want to engage. The purpose is to provide your classmates with a well-rounded portrait of this person, not simply a list of his or her publications. The starting point should be the UWB home page. You should use at least five sources (web pages), but can certainly use more. All five sources could be from the UWB web site if they give you enough information. Write a 250 word report and include a Sources Cited section at the end, using any identifiable citation format. (I would suggest using one of the more common ones, like APA, MLA, or Chicago.) To choose an individual, first determine if she or he fits the category to be researched (a key information literacy skill in itself), then post his or her name to the appropriate Blackboard forum, using his or her name as the subject. When you've completed the essay, reply to your message adding "Report" after the person's name, and paste in the report (do not add an attachment). Post by class time on Tuesday.

We meet in the library on Tuesday.
