Foldable Robotics
Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Washington
2018 NIFTI/SOAR 9 workshop

Instructor: Prof. Sawyer Fuller

The purpose of this course is to teach the design and fabrication of laser-cut foldable mechanisms. In addition, we provide information about where suitable parts and materials can be found for purchase online, and how to program your robot to move using a raspberry pi and off-the-shelf servos. Not covered are how to use a specific laser cutter, though the techniques covered work with all known laser cutter manufacturers (e.g. Glowforge, Universal Laser, Epilog). It also does not cover kinematics, dynamics, and control of foldable structures.

The picture above shows a servo-actuated hand made by this process that is an homage to Seattle grunge music.
