Gloss: gentilesse
gentilesse (gentleness): The quality of
"gentilesse" (gentleness) was an important component of Chaucer's
assessment of his female characters. He mentions it here (lines 1010,
1080, 1306) in his sympathetic characterization of Dido, in reference to
the transformed bride in the Wife of Bath's Tale, and in a short
poem by the same title.
