Instructional Methods for Teaching Math

Application Exercises

Application exercises are due at the beginning of class on the week following the reading assignment to which they are related. We will grade the assignments in class and you will hand them in. I will assign points based on completeness. The exercises are an important part of your learning experience and will challenge you to think deeply about how what you have read applies to specific examples.

Week One

Note: In Week One the questions are really study questions, not application exercises. In contrast to the application exercises, you should be able to find all these answers in text. I have asked items that I think are important to highlight.

Chapter 1

  1. What are the three instructional variables that are essential ingredients of a successful mathematics program?
  2. What are the five components needed in constructing an effective instructional program?
  3. How should objectives be stated?
  4. Is the following objective acceptable? “The child will understand the concept of regrouping.”
  5. What are the two possible causes of students’ errors during group instruction?
  6. Most error corrections follow what three-step procedure?
  7. Define the terms diagnosis and remediation.

Chapter 2

  1. What are strand and spiral designs?
  2. What should evaluators do to determine the explicitness of a strategy?
  3. What is discrimination practice?
  4. What is scaffolded instruction?

Chapter 3

  1. What are the two major approaches to mathematics instruction?
  2. What were the key instructional features in Good and Grouws’ Missouri Mathematics Effectiveness Project?
  3. What four types of interventions did Baker, Gersten, and Lee identify as effective for students who are at risk for academic failure?
  4. What are the instructional design elements critical to the development of mathematics instruction that will meet the needs of all teachers and students?
