1) September 9 Introduction, definitions and questions 2) October 6 Defining & measuring diversity & community composition Jordan Watson & Meriwether Petchey, O.L., A. Hector and K.J. Gaston (2004). How do different measures of functional diversity perform? Ecology 85: 847-857. J. H. Steele (1991). Marine functional diversity. Bioscience 41:470-474.
Palmer (Ecology, 1990 & 1991(correction to 1990 paper)) review of a number of estimator types. Russ Lande also has a paper about the Simpson's index recently (Lande et al. 2000?)? This paper addresses ways of dealing with the fact that accumulation curves could cross with higher sampling levels.
i) Please read p. 3-15 (top) for this week. We will read the rest later in teh quarter. Hooper et al. (2005). Effects of biodiversity on ecosystem functioning: a consensus of current knowledge. Ecological Monographs 75: 3-35. iv)
Please just skim Micheli & Halpern for the main points. We do
nto have time to discuss the dsetails, but I wanted to include it as it
is a nice & recent example of the importance of cuntional diversity
to MPAs. Other related readings:
i) Please read p. 15-21 (II A & B) for this week. You should alrady have a hard copy of this paper! Hooper et al. (2005). Effects of biodiversity on ecosystem functioning: a consensus of current knowledge. Ecological Monographs 75: 3-35. ii) A nice example of stability at a large spatial scale from our department. Hilborn et al. (2003) Biocomplexity and fisheries sustainability. PNAS 100: 6564-6568. iii) A nice review. McCann, K.S. (2000) The diversity-stability debate. Nature 405: 228-233. iv) And another short but good bit from Cedar Creek from early on in the study of diversity and stability. Tilman, D. and J.A. Downing (1994) Biodiversity and stability in grasslands. Nature 367: 363-365.
Unfortunately, I had trouble finding good aquatic examples, and I wanted to keep the list short for this week.
1) Review the Ricketts paper from last week briefly and then read this follow-up. Ricketts et al. Economic value of tropical forests coffee production. PNAS 101(43): 12579-12582. 2) Millenium Assessment. Let's start by reading this general overview. next week we will focus in on a particular section, but this will give us a start at the scope of things. It is long, but easy to read and with lots of photos. **November 24** Thanksgiving Holiday
1) Before we get back to talking about the MA this week, let's start with this paper on ecosystem services in an aquatic system. Peter J. Mumby et al. 2004. Mangroves enhance the biomass of coral reef fish communities in the Caribbean. Nature 427. 2) This LONG file is a general synthesis of the MA. Let's focus on the Scenarios section. Please read pages 71-83.
