5

Probs. 5.3; 7.5; 7.8a,b; 7.14; For 5.3, use Mineql+ and derive the whole titration curve in 5.3b; Solve 7.8b both manually and using Mineql+. For 7.14, assume that all the added aluminum precipitates via the reaction shown 11/06/07 HW5

6

Probs. 8.1; 8.2a,b. 11/13/07 HW6

7

8.2c,d; 8.4c; 8.10. Use Mineql+ for 8.2 and 8.4.
For 8.2c, use Hg(OH)2 as component, not Hg22+, and make sure that the Type V Species Hg(OH)2 is moved to Type VI. For 8.4, modify K values for Cu-NH3 and Cu-OH complexes to conform to values in the text, but don't save those changes to the permanent database on the UW computers.
11/20/07 HW7

8

Probs. 8.19, 8.20. For 8.19, carry out calculations only for the second assumption listed in the problem statement; skip the calculations associated with the first assumption. For 8.20, ignore complexes other than those between Me and OH 11/28/07 HW8

SOME HOMEWORK GUIDELINES:

DO:

  • provide enough room for a clear layout and don’t hesitate to continue on the next page
  • use engineering paper or paper with a plain, light-colored background and a dark pencil or ink
  • state assumptions, and explain your reasoning!
  • use at least a half-page, and engineering paper, for hand-drawn graphs
  • recopy a problem neatly if it begins to look jumbled after revisions (this will encourage you to double-check your solution, as well as ensuring a neat, well laid-out solution)

DON’T:

  • write lightly in pencil on a light background (hard to read)
  • make random disembodied calculations without explanation (hard to understand)
