Building Kindling House

The old owners of our house left a large doghouse on the property when they moved out. Instead of throwing it away, we decided to convert it into a box where we could store kindling for the fireplace.

  1. The problem we currently have is that all the stuff we use for kindling (cardboard, small pieces of wood, etc.) are being stored under the wood shed. This is quite unsightly.

  2. We started by cutting the top of the house off using the circular saw.

  3. We then built a 2x4 frame inside the top of the bottom half to create support. We screwed in the siding to this frame using short deckmate screws.

  4. We then placed the top half back on top and attached two hinges so the box could open like a treasure chest.


  5. The completed project is shown below in Figure 5.
