Physics 116A, Winter 2007
Oscillations, Waves, and Modern Physics

Assignments

There is a mandatory homework assignment using the Tycho system of computerized problems, which can be accessed through the link

http://tycho2.phys.washington.edu/courses/Phys116/winter07/

These problems are due every Wednesday by 7:00 pm for full credit. If not done on time, problems can be turned up to 24 hours later for 50% credit.

In addition, problems at the end of the chapter in Walker's book will be noted here, by chapter, regardless where the lectures are on any particular day. Please do them but do not turn them in. Unfortunately we don't have a grader who can check them. Feel free to ask the instructor, or TAs/faculty in the Study Center, for help if you can not solve them. Some of the problems will be almost identical to the Tycho problems. If you are new to Tycho, be aware that the system is quite sensitive to "significant figures", so you should not "round" any figures while solving the problems, only round at the end of the calculatiion. Don't forget the minus (-) sign, if the answer is negative!!!

Problems from Text

Chapter 13 (Walker's book, 3rd Edition): 5, 11, 15, 19, 27, 35, 42, 43 (these last two are a pair, solution to 43 is in book, solution to 42 will be posted), 50 (solution will be  provided, pendulum like the one in our Physics Hall), 65, 74, 75 (last two are another pair, with solution to 75 posted). In Walker's book, 2nd Edition, which many of you have, the same problems are numbered 5, 11, 15, 19, 25, 33, 40, 41 (pair as above), 50, 61, 72, 73 (pair as above).

Chapter 14 (Walker's book, 2nd or 3rd Editions): here is a list of extra problems from Chapter 14 of Walker's book. The problem numbers are the same in both the 2nd and 3rd editions as well as the text of the problems, but some of the numbers (velocities, wavelengths, frequencies) within each problem are different. The numbers are: 5, 9,  16, 17 (last two are connected), 23, 27, 35, 47, 51, 57, 63.

Chapter 25 (Walker's book, 2nd or 3rd Edition): This week there are very few Tycho problems in the "storage", so not many were assigned. Please work the following problems in Walker's book (2nd or 3rd edition have identical problems except for small changes in numerical values). Ch. 25, Problems 5, 11, 15, 23, 29, 37, 43, 57, 69, 71, and 77

Chapter 26 and part of 27 (Walker's book, 2nd or 3rd Editions): Posted 1/31/07. This week there are quite a few Tycho problems in HW Assignment 5, which span all the topics we are going to cover from  Chapters 26 and 27 before the next Exam on Thusday, February 8. It is a long assignment, so start to work on it early. We will finish polarization and do flat and curved mirrors in class tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 1, and start refraction and lenses on Friday. Here are some additional problems from Walker's book (2nd or 3rd edition, differences are in numerical values): Chapter 26, Problems 5, 13, 19. 29. 33. 43. 49, 59, 61, 67, 73, and Chapter 27, Problems 3, 7 and 11. Solutions to problems from Ch. 25 are posted, go to Solutions

Chapter 27 and 28 (Walker's 3rd Edition and 2nd Edition): Posted 2/14/07. Please work the following additional problems from Walker's book, 3rd Edition (2nd edition indicated, if different).: Chapter 27, Problems 21 (also do the ray tracing to find the image), 27, 49 (also do the ray tracing), 59, 65, and 69, Chapter 28, Problems 3, 5, 15, 21 (Prob. 23 in Second Edition), 31, 35, 43, 51, 53, 63, and 67.
